Lighthouse

It was never the crashing waves
that wore the lighthouse down.
It was the waiting,
for ships that no longer sailed its way,
that made it lay aside its crown.

Still, it burned through every night,
a habit more than a hope.
Not calling for rescue,
only remembering it once had mattered,
chasing horizons beyond its scope.
